Even though I am typically better dressed than Cameron on any given day, itâs still very uncomfortable for me to show up in a suit at her doorstep. Especially considering that Iâm here for her daughter and not for Cameron.
A middle-aged woman answers the door and smiles brightly at me when she sees me. âOh! You must be Luke!â She ushers me in and then pulls me in for a hug. âAngie is so excited for this dance!â
I smile back and look around at the house. Itâs certainly old. A lot of woodwork and antique furniture, but all displayed in a very modern and livable way. Cameronâs house feels comfortable.
âCameron!â the woman trills as she leads me down the hall. âYour daughterâs date is here!â
We pass by a living room with a wide-open fireplace and a beautiful Christmas tree in the corner. Thereâs a couch in the center of the room and the TV sits above the fireplace. Thereâs also a large wooden table behind the couch in the opposite corner from the TV.
But we walk by all of that and into the kitchen in the back, where a little girl is sitting at a barstool at the counter and Cameron stands behind her and braids her hair.
âHey Luke.â Cameron smiles at me when she sees me. âJust finishing up.â She nods to the woman, âYouâve already met my mother, Alice. And this is Angie.â
âYour date,â the little girl says.
âItâs very nice to meet you.â I step forward and shake her hand, pretending to be as formal as possible in order to make Angie feel special.
Cameron leans in close to her daughterâs ear and stage-whispers, âWhat do you think? You want to give it a try? Or do you want to kick him to the curb and stay home?â
Angie laughs and turns to her mom. âIâll give everyone a shot once.â
âOh dear, I hope thatâs not true.â Alice places a hand on her chest and laughs.
Cameron ties off the braid and then holds up a mirror for Angie. âWhat do you think? Are you ready for your dance debut?â
âItâs so pretty, Mom!â
Cameron kisses the top of Angieâs head. âIâm glad you like it. You look beautiful, darling.â
Angie slides off the chair and cautiously steps toward me.
I crouch down to her level. âWeâre going to have fun tonight. Iâll have to break out my dance moves. Maybe show those kids there a thing or two.â
Angie giggles.
âWhat do you say I go out and warm up the car so you can say goodbye to your mom?â I offer. âIâll be back to come get you in two minutes.â
She nods shyly.
Alice follows me to the door and mutters, âThank you so much for doing this. Angie really is looking forward to this dance. I wouldâve taken her, but I have dinner plans. And, of course, you know how Cameron has to work.â
âItâs not a problem. Weâll have fun.â
Out at the car, I fire it up, blast the heat, and get the radio playing the Christmas music at a nice, easy volume.
